This love is not easy, just understand that it is a river of fire and one has to drown. In the novel Aag Ka Darya, the technique of ‘flow of consciousness’ has been successfully experimented with, although before that, Sajjad Zaheer had experimented with the technique of flow of consciousness in one of his novels ‘London Ki Ek Raat’ and Qurratul Ain Haider himself had experimented with the technique of flow of consciousness in his first novel ‘Mere Bhi Sanam Khane’. The novel “Aag Darya” was translated into English by Quratul Ain Haider as the river of fire. The story of the novel Aag Ka Darya begins with the era of Indian civilization two and a half thousand years ago, which flourished in the Sravasti and Partipatras, and ends by presenting Indian civilization in the historical and cultural background of the events of the Partition of India. Explaining the reason for writing the novel Aag Ka Darya, Quratul Ain Haider writes, “Why was the country divided? Partition was historically inevitable. This question drew me towards the philosophy of history. In an attempt to answer this, I wrote a novel Aag Ka Darya. By making the river a symbol of a jug, I tried to capture the greatness of the Indian personality from the vast and confused history of three thousand years.”
The novel Aag Ka Darya does not mention any single event, but rather presents a series of births and deaths. This novel consists of five periods and 101 chapters. In the early period of the novel, we are exposed to the atmosphere of two and a half thousand years ago in the history of India. The society, way of thinking and values of life are all the same by which the man of this era can be identified. We can call this era the era of Gautam Buddha. Gautam Buddha of this ancient era is a philosopher, he is a prominent student of his era and has access to the prevailing sciences. In the second period, it describes the wave that has risen in this ocean of civilization, India, after the arrival of Muslims and the changes that have taken place. The famous member of this period is Abul Mansur Kamaluddin. In the third period, it describes how the East India Company's footsteps begin to settle in India after the decline of Muslims, what measures the British use for this, and in comparison, how easy and morally depraved the last defender of Mughal glory displays. In the fourth period, the center of action shifts from India to Europe, and the same generation that was representing the upper middle class in Lucknow at the end of the third period is seen in London, Cambridge and Paris. The fifth period deals with the Indian and Pakistani societies after the partition of the country. To download this novel in PDF format, click on the download button below.
